Grade K Starter-Kit: Our Elder Brothers and Sisters
SUMMARY
This unit’s concepts and activities spring from the Aboriginal worldview that all beings are connected and interdependent. The circle teaches and illustrates this continuity of life and interconnectedness of purpose. Animals are part of our family and the circle life. Learning about animals and life connections gives students the opportunity to share their knowledge and new experiences with one another.

Grade 1 Starter-Kit: Teachings of Kindness from the Heart
SUMMARY
From the foundation of the Teachings of the Seven Grandfathers, this unit focuses on the teaching of Zaagidwin (love). Various activities look at helpers in the community, odemin (strawberry), mathematics lessons based on the number seven, and heart health. The unit culminates in an activity in which students plan and carry out an act from the heart.

Grade 2 Starter-Kit: The Importance of Corn in the Nations
SUMMARY
Students will learn about the three sisters – corn, beans, and squash. In addition, corn will form the basis of numerous craft, literacy, mathematics, mapping, and nutrition activities. The culminating activity is a fall fair for the class. The importance of giving thanks for the gifts we are given is stressed throughout the unit.

Grade 3 Starter-Kit: The Dance of All Peoples
SUMMARY
By studying trees and their smaller plant cousins, students will have many opportunities to learn about their relations in the plant world. Through stories, counting, vocabulary-building, mapping, and crafts, students will learn about the value of a respectful, fun, and interesting relationship with plants.

Grade 4 Starter-Kit: Circle of Life
SUMMARY
This multidisciplinary unit provides a variety of activities in art, mathematics, science, health, social studies, and language arts. Students explore the world of flowers and their individual characteristics through art projects and writing poetry. The book Ceremony – In the Circle of Life provides information about traditional practices of Aboriginal people that provides a basis for several mathematics activities.

Grade 5 Starter-Kit: Teachings of Ninaatig (maple tree)
SUMMARY
The focus of the unit will be on the life within the maple forest during the early spring season, when maple syrup is gathered from the trees. The unit is meant to help students develop an understanding of their place in this beautiful celebration of the return of the spring. Students will investigate the roles and responsibilities of Ninaatig (maple tree) and the people who gather and prepare Ninaatig’s gifts.

Grade 6 Starter-Kit: Honouring the Star People
SUMMARY
This unit will introduce the sky and the stars and the early relationship between Aboriginal People and early explorers. Students read many teachings of the night sky from different nations and write their own interpretations of the stars in various poetry styles. The Anishinaabe Creation Story is studied, as well as creation stories from other nations. An extra-curricular activity has students keeping a journal of the night sky and documenting the changes they see.

Grade 7 Starter-Kit: Honouring the Web of Life
SUMMARY
Students working through this unit will develop an understanding of the different views of the world, and how different cultures develop and incorporate this understanding into their way of life and thinking. The unit begins with teachings of relationships between people, ceremonies, and how life was lived on a daily basis.

Grade 8 Starter-Kit: I Am the Water and the Water Is Me
SUMMARY
The purpose of this unit is to familiarize students with the various and unique aspects of water. They will explore how water moves and shapes the earth, as well as the relationships human beings have created with water. The unit relies heavily on the internet for student research, and they will practice many of their research skills, including reading for meaning, note-taking and summarizing, organizing, and finding information to support an opinion. Students will prepare a PowerPoint presentation for the culminating activity.
